Founders of The Rhode Island Colony
Anne Hutchinson Roger Williams
Who were Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson? The videos above will give you a quick blurb about these two great people. Roger Williams was exiled from the Massachusetts colony for wanting religious freedom, and believing that there should be a separation between church and state. He fled Massachusetts to settle his own colony that allowed anyone who came to live there the freedom to practice any religious (religious freedom). Originally the colony was named Providence Plantations, but was later changed to Rhode Island. Anne Hutchinson left the Massachusetts colony with 60 followers, heading to Rhode Island. Though Anne did attend a Puritan church she did not agree with all the teachings. When A new governor of Massachusetts was elected Anne was charged and brought to trial because her beliefs went against that of the church. When Williams fled Massachusetts he was given a tract of land from the Wampanoag natives and allowed to settle. Upon the settlement of Rhode Island Williams made sure that this colony would be freely religious and have the separation of church and state.
